 The Good Clinical Practice workshop was held on 29th June 2024 at Government Medical College, Ongole organised by the Department of Pharmacology under the guidance of Dr. Yedukondala Rao, Principal/Addl.DME. The workshop was attended by over 124 postgraduates of varying disciplines and healthcare professionals with Dr. Chalamaiah, renowned ophthalmologist gracing the occasion as the APMC Observer. Following inauguration and lamp lighting ceremony by the dignitaries, Dr. Chalamaiah addressed the gathering with importance of maintaining integrity and good attitude in medical practices and shared few pearls from his experience as clinician.

Highlights of the session:

The workshop was mainly aimed at giving an in-depth understanding of good clinical practice principles and their implementation in clinical research. It encompassed an array of interactive sessions led by esteemed speakers in the field. Opening speech, keynote speeches, and case studies comprised the agenda.

Opening remarks were given by Dr. K. Chandrakala, Professor & HoD, Department of Pharmacology, GMC Ongole. Dr. K. Chandrakala conveyed why clinical research should be done, emphasized the importance of principles of good clinical practice and their implementation in clinical research.

Keynote speeches included sessions from prominent speakers with Dr. Ch. Jhansi Vani, Associate Professor, Department of Pharmacology, GMC Ongole explained the responsibilities of Institutional Ethics Committee and how ethics committee gives utmost importance to the patients well – being and safety. Dr. S. Supriya, Assistant Professor, Department of Pharmacology, GMC Ongole, highlighted the importance of informed consent which needs to be taken prior to the clinical trials. Dr. G. Chaitanya, Senior Manager, Global brands therapeutic area clinician, Pfizer Healthcare Private Limited, Chennai pointed out the regulatory requirements for conducting research in India and how to report the adverse events in clinical trials and explained the compensation in clinical trials. Dr. Thulasi Gokul, Assistant Professor, Department of Pharmacology, GMC Ongole stressed on the importance of recruitment &retention of participants and its impact on the clinical trials. Dr. T. Venkata Naresh Assistant Professor, Department of Pharmacology, GMC Ongole gave insights on stakeholders in clinical

trials, and how each member of research team plays an important role during the entire trial. Dr. K. Krishnakanth, Assistant Professor, Department of Pharmacology, GMC Ongole elaborated on how to record, retrieve, review and dispose the data documentation in clinical trials. Dr. K. Bhaskari, Associate Professor, Department of Community Medicine, GMC Ongole enlightened the attendees on designing a research protocol and explained the do’s and don’ts while writing a protocol. Dr. M. Abrar, Senior Resident, Department of Pharmacology, GMC Ongole spoke about fabrication of data, consequences, reasons and how to prevent research misconduct.

Dr. K. Krishnakanth, Assistant Professor, Department of Pharmacology, GMC Ongole had an interactive session with the attendees where case studies were discussed in order to gain better understanding on application of good clinical practices in clinical research.

Closing Remarks were given by Dr. Thulasi Gokul and Dr. S. Supriya summarising the key takeaways from the workshop. They expressed their heartfelt thanks to the organisers, speakers, and attendees for their active participation. A feedback survey was taken from the participants.

The Good Clinical Practice workshop was a huge success, offering valuable insights and guidance to all the attendees. Department of Pharmacology looks forward to conduct future workshops and continued collaborations in promoting best practices in clinical research.
